Dr. Rajagopala Sridaran, Professor of Physiology at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) met Dr. Selva Shunmugam, Secretary of Health India Foundation, in Atlanta, georgia in the summer of 2015. Since then, our activities at MSM promoted Traditional Siddha Medicine (TSM) as a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) primarily to medical students and graduate students.
MSM approved a MD 4th year elective for four weeks to its students to be held in Chennai, Tamilnadu at the Health India Foundation, under the mentorship of Dr. Selva Shunmugam and in Manipal at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) under the mentorship of Dr. Arul Amuthan. In the fall of 2022, MSM students, Ms. Merna Beshara, Mr. George Ibrahim and Mr. Jason Acheampong were chosen for this program. Subsequently, Dr. Acheampong matched into the ENT residency program where he is applying this knowledge as a CAM. Dr. Sridaran accompanied the students to India to learn and evaluate the effectiveness of this program. This elective was the first of its kind for medical students in North America or anywhere outside of Southern India.
MSM signed a MoU in 2022 with MAHE for collaborative programs in Medicine. As a result of this, MSM promoted Siddha Medicine in graduate programs by incorporating some lectures on Siddha Medicine in the Human Biology course given by Drs. Shunmugam and Amuthan.
Three MD students and One MD-PhD student are scheduled to leave for India this fall of 2024 accompanied by Drs. Sridaran and Tharakan to participate in the MD 4th year elective for four weeks as second cohorts of students to continue this program.
MSM is in the process of offering online courses for health and allied health professionals.
Establishing a Siddha Herbal Garden near the main campus of MSM in Atlanta is in the works now along with the consideration of conducting a Health and Wellness workshop at MSM in the near future.
