New York-Tamil Integrative Medicine/ Parallel session on FeTNA 35th Annual Convention
The 35th annual convention of the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA) was held at St. John's University, Queens, New York, USA on Sunday 3rd July 2022.
For the first time in the history of the Federation, a parallel session was devoted to Tamil Integrative Medicine
This was jointly hosted by FeTNA, Global Center for Siddha Medicine and Research (GCSMR ) and Tamil Chair Inc.
Doctors and researchers from prominent medical Universities in the USA, who attended and shared their valuable knowledge and experience in the session were : Dr. Sankari Sivasailam, Oncologist, Maryland; Dr. Anand Chockalingam, Cardiologist, Missouri; Dr. Rajagopala Sridharan, Professor of Physiology, Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta; Dr. Sundar Balasubramanium of the Medical University of South Carolina; Dr. Ram Mahalingam, Professor of Psychology, University of Michigan, Siddha Yogi Raj Babu of Texas and Dr. V. Janakiraman, Cardiologist, Virginia.
Siddha doctors from India who attended and shared their experiences and knowledge were Dr. Selva Shanmugam, Siddha doctor and Researcher, Health India Foundation, Chennai; Dr. Arul Amudhan, Siddha doctor and Researcher, Manipal University, Karnataka; and, Dr. G. Sivaraman, Chief Siddha Physician, Arogya Health Care, Chennai and Member of the State Planning Commission, Govt of Tamil Nadu.
The topics covered in detail were - Siddha and Integrative Medicine - yoga, varmam and healthy lifestyles; Siddha functional foods and nutraceuticals; Pranayama, Mindfulness and Psychological health and Ancient Siddha Spiritual practices.
Various viewpoints and suggestions were put forth on the methods of integrating Siddha medicine and modern medicine.
An overview and update of the activities of the GCSMR were given by the President Thiru. D. Sivasailam and the Secretary, Tmt. Thamarai.
Dr. Sornam Sankar, Tamil Chair Inc., Maryland moderated the Q &A session at the end of the programme, besides explaining future networking ideas.

This was a free session where the doctors gave insights and tips on how to achieve wellness through natural means and managing diseases.

It was an extremely useful meeting considering the prevalence of mental illness after the onset of Covid-19.

The speaker was Dr. Arul Amudhan who gave valuable information on traditional Siddha medicine; basics and history of Siddha medicine; preventive measures of Siddha medicine for several diseases; non-pharmacological approaches in Siddha medicine and Integrative options to bridge modern and traditional medicine.
This was the CTC’s first Siddha event . CTC President Mr. Sivan Elango expressed that this is one of a kind program and extremely useful virtual event for all who attended.

The in-person meeting on Integrative metabolic therapies; Dietary insights and opportunities in healthcare was conducted by the University of Missouri, Columbia on 20th July 2022.
Dr.Selva Shanmugam spoke on Holistic Primordial Prevention. Dr. Arul Amudhan spoke on Anti-aging Diet. They were joined by other researchers and doctors who spoke on topics like hunger, ketogenic TBI care, malnutrition in obesity, etc.
Both the Siddha doctors attended and addressed the Family Medicine Grand Rounds and put forth their views on "Scope of traditional medicine" and "Outcomes of research in diabetes". It is a very well received Grand round speech by all doctors , researchers who attended in person and by virtual meeting. Thanks to Dr Anand Chokkalingam for organizing this event.
